Secondary research is research that has already been carried out, for example i have used secondary research: Stock footage, this is great secondary research because it allows you to watch real footage of what your topic is about. Stock footage will be very useful because my documentary is about war and it would be good if I could get real footage of certain areas around Manchester that was affected during the war.
Secondary Research: Books are great secondary research because it allows you to connect with the author and the book in general, it also allows you to get some first hand knowledge from the book. This kind of research is very good because it is easy to get and simple to use.
Books are also very good because you can find a lot of information about your certain topic with minimal effort.
The primary research I will use is research such as interviews to get better information for my documentary, also interviews are a great way of getting good quality knowledge from different people/sources, also I think this type of primary research is good because it's very easy to get hold of. It's so easy to ask people questions and get good answers, I feel this is a great way to get information for my documentary.
Also due to there being lots of places around Manchester who will give us interviews, it will be very easy to find places that link to our topic, this is why I feel it is one of the best forms of research.
Going back to Secondary research, I feel the Internet is the best research due to it being so easy to log on too and get information from, for example you can quickly go onto Google and type something for research purposes in, or go onto YouTube to try and find some stock footage or interviews with soldiers you can take inspiration from, this is defiantly the best way to gather information about your topic in general and would be the best place to go if you didn't have information fatally and was starting from scratch. Due to it being so easy and not time consuming at all I think it is very easy to find facts about you topic and it can help you drastically, but also it can provide false information which can be terrible when it comes too putting your documentary out there to the eye of the public.
When going to these certain places, I will carry out questions that will help me discover about the local area and what happened to the local area during the war. I will also film these locations and film the man or woman that I am interviewing showing us around these locations.
NEW WORK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiW_yYOm2e8
The link I have presented is similar to the documentary I want to make in terms of it being documented in a City or a town just like my documentary is going to be, I thought they were similar in the way they will both be focused around only one place, and this really intrigued me for when I'm filming my documentary due to my idea having similarities with the link above.
I feel a lot of my ideas for my documentary idea could come from documentaries like this one, where it does show a lot of techniques that are available to me that could make my documentary more interesting and could boost my overall audience.
As I said before interviews will be a big part of my documentary, but not just questions and answers, we will conduct a 'stories' interview session that will allow us to connect with the people we are I interviewing by them telling us stories of there ancestors and stories from the war, I feel this would be a good idea because it will actually show the viewer emotion when watching the documentary.
These are two screenshots of a research/focus group, these answers are really going to help and boost the documentary in terms of results when the documentary is aired on Television, i also think it will help because i feel it will help me to connect with my audience and it will let me understand who will want to watch my documentary when it is aired.
I feel this has helped me a little bit because it has helped me understand who wants to watch my documentary and what kind of people will be watching it in terms of social class and social standing, also it gives me new ideas that i could include to maybe boost there knowledge of the topic and also it may sway there decision whether to watch it or not.
I feel i could have asked something else that might have helped me understand my audience a little bit more, i also feel that with the questions i asked there could have been a little more detail in terms of how i asked them.
I feel that i could have used more books as research on target audience and the times that i should air the documentary,i also feel more internet research would have been very good and useful, although i researched a lot over the internet i feel more search would have benefited my campaign.
Market research-
I am going to advertise my documentary in many different ways, firstly i thought what is going to be the best place to advertise it? i did research on different places and come to understand that advertising my documentary in Manchester and around the local Manchester area would be the best due to me documenting around the Greater Manchester Area. I also feel this is best because the audience is going to be a majority that knows about the war in Manchester and would maybe understand what i'm talking about a little bit more, adding to this it is the best place to advertise because people would be interested due to it being about the local area in general. I would advertise with leaflets and posters that would advertise a little about what is it about and what you can learn from watching it, also i feel posters are a really good way how to advertise because it gives you a chance to meet your audience and see who may watch your documentary, firstly i would appeal to a much older audience, 60+ due to the documentary being able to relate to them because they might have seen the war first hand.
One of the other ways that i am going to promote my documentary through advertisement is through a small YouTube advert that will promote my documentary, i feel this is a really good way of getting views and a larger audience because the internet is huge hub that will reach out to a massive audience of people, i also feel this is a good way because it allows me to connect with different people and different audiences from around the world, this can help my documentary by making it globally known, this would obviously bring a massive audience towards my documentary.
When it goes onto a channel on Television, i feel the best channel for me to pick would be a channel that is orientated with history, I.E. The History Channel or a channel that involves every audience, such as BBC 1, BBC 2 or ITV 1, i have chosen these channels due to them being the biggest channels in the UK and would help the documentary gain popularity.
I would design my marketing campaign such as the posters, advert on YouTube and the leaflets differently when compared with past History documentaries, i would do it different because i feel i can make the advertising and the design different and it would be it stand out and more interesting than past documentary advertising campaigns that i have previously looked at. Firstly i would like to start with the short advert, i feel an emotional advert or an advert that makes you think about the lives of the people that suffered during the war in Manchester.
I feel the best way for me to make my documentary how i want to make it is to make it emotional and direct to the audience, i feel by making it direct and straight forward my audience would like it much more because it would be interesting but straight to the point.
I feel the research methods that i used were really useful and helped me understand my audience and helped for the documentary in terms of getting all the information and learning about the history of what happened. i also feel that the research that i did was useful because, although i have already said this it has helped me connect with different audiences that may watch my documentary.
Production Research-
The locations would be generally buildings or structured that were hit during the war or damaged, this would give us a lot more footage to speak over or put into our documentary, also I would talk to priests and people who work inside the churches that were hit during the war to find information that a lot of people wouldn't have known.
Adding to this, i think that the locations that our team and i have individually picked are very good because it shows the characters of the buildings and how they have been restructured over the years.
These are some locations i may use when filming my documentary:
This is one of the locations i will use, i will use this location due to it being the Manchester War Museum. I have visited this location prior to filming to gain research and knowledge about the Manchester Blitz, i feel this would be a great place to film because it is the main museum fro the Manchester Blitz, i feel this is an interesting place to film because it gives me a place where i can interview professionals and people who know a lot about the The War In Manchester.
This is another place i could film, i feel this is a great place to film due to the Cathedral being affected majorly during the war. This would be good to film in because i could get more interviews and there may be some old files or records i can look at and include in my documentary that may show the effect from the war.
I think filming my documentary throughout the day would be a good time to film due to it being i feel the most correct and appropriate time to film, I also think filming during the day is better because the locations where i want to film may not be open later through the day, but then again for some locations it may give for better affect towards the audience as more of a dark atmosphere.
In Conclusion to this, i feel that all the information that i have described will really help me in terms of filming my documentary, editing it etc. I also feel with all the information, i can really make a strong and moving documentary that can show what life was like during the war for sufferers of the Manchester Blitz. The interviews i will conduct i feel, will be very interesting and appealing to the audience.
Adding to this conclusion, i feel the idea for the documentary in a whole is a great idea because it has never been done before, especially for a more unknown place that was affected by the war and a place that many people didn't know was affected by the war. My documentary will do well at educating an audience who doesn't know enough about the war in Manchester and i feel this documentary can do that.
