UNIT 22 OUTCOME 1

A single camera production is when there is only one camera being used. usually they only use one camera being it is easier to move around, especially when you have a small crew. Most single camera productions are shot on location, this makes it easier to move around because you will only have one camera on location. Majority of films are usually single camera dramas, they use this so the camera is always on the actors so they can perform to there best, other shows/programmes are Documentaries, Films and Mini-Series.

Scenes are normally filmed all together so if there’s a dialogue scene all the lines of one persons will be shot together and same for the other person, then edited to look like they’re having a convocation.

NARRATIVE-
The narrative of a film or TV series is the storyline that the film or TV series follows. But the story or plot can differ between each film/TV series because of the narrative structure it uses, which can change the way the film or TV series is set out using a number of techniques which are linear, non-linear, flashbacks and open/closed endings.

Linear- This means it goes in a straight line from beginning to end.
Progressing from one stage to another in a single series of steps; sequential. This is basically any films that have a beginning, middle and an ending
An example of a Linear film is The Social Network

Non-linear - This means that the story is not in sequence.
An example of a Non-Linear film is Watchmen
It follows the ending, beginning and the middle then back to the end. Another example of non-linear structure is Pulp Fiction because it follows the story in different sequences.

Binary Opposite
Light VS Dark or Good VS Evil
An example for this is Star Wars
A scene in a film, novel, etc. set in a time earlier than the main story. An example of this is Memento which uses flashbacks to show him remembering what he has done this film, Avengers Assemble and other superhero based films because there's always good fighting against evil which is the main plot for these type of films, most of the time in these films good always overcomes evil in the end.

Flashbacks- This is a look into the past that helps the story move forward.
An example for this the The Flash TV Series
A scene in a film, novel, etc. set in a time earlier than the main story. An example of this is Memento which uses flashbacks to show him remembering what he has done, Another example of this is The Flash TV series which uses consecutive flashbacks to tell the story.

Open - Cliffhanger, normally a TV series

An open narrative structure is usually found in television series, and mostly on soap operas such as EastEnders/Neighbours. In these narratives, the story has no apparent beginning, middle or end, in terms of the actual events. A familiar device in open narratives, especially soap operas, is a cliffhanger ending to each episode, from which the next episode can follow on. As a result, these stories can last a long time, and the programme itself can continue for years.
E.G-An example of a cliffhanger is X-Men 2

Closed - Resolution, loose end are tied up.

A closed narrative structure is most commonly found in movies. As mentioned before, movies generally exist as one unique story, and contain a beginning, middle and an ending. A story is unravelled before an audience, and then ultimately brought to a conclusion. A closed narrative in a movie does not necessarily mean no sequels can be made. There can be prequels, set before the chronology of the first movie, or a sequel that can create an all-new story.

E.G- An example of this is Scott Pilgrim VS The World

DRIVE FILM ANALYSIS
Sound/Diagetic/Non-Diagetic

The diagetic sound that is introduced into the fight scene is the banging of the elevator, the violence, E.G the head kicking, also script and dialogue has been introduced, i feel the scene overall has a lot of sound. The sound that is in this scene is Non-Diagetic and Diagetic sound. Firstly the Diagetic sound that is in this scene is things such as the fighting and the pushing and pulling in the scene. this is possibly the biggest part of the whole scene with a lot of the sound being around that. I feel the sound that is going on in this fighting sequence is a big part of the film all together because the fighting and the sound involved in this scene really sets the tone for the rest of the film. It also is great for the audience biggest the fighting brings tension and a gritty feel to the film during this fighting scene. Adding to this i think that the natural sound gives the audience and viewers a sense of realism throughout this sequence.

Secondly- The sound that is also in this scene is not only Diagetic sound, there is Non-Diagetic sound involved in this scene is the music of the kissing sequence. This is good because it adds raw emotion for the audience to witness. This is an important feature of the film, because the music also allows the audience to connect to the characters through the music. During this scene, the really represents the scene throughout. E.G during the kissing scene, it provides raw emotions through music and allows you to connect with the characters on an emotional level but then when the fighting scene is on the screen, the music suddenly goes it becomes a more gritty, less emotional and more of a shocking scene.
The sounds that are included in this film are amazing, such as the violence and the music. They all fit together very well, it also makes it very dramatic for the audience.

Editing-
Editing: the editing in the begging of this scene is very slow for effect and also for tension building purposes, the cuts speed up once the protagonist and the thug start fighting to 1 give the viewers more points of view of the fight and 2 to give the viewers the feeling that the pace is picking up and make the viewers feel more energised, once the thug has been defeated the speed then once again slows to a crawl to give the effect to the audience that he may be contemplating what he has done. the pacing of this scene is very well maintained, it is fast in the fighting scene and slow in the begging.

Mise En Scene-

Mise en scene: the lighting for this scene is fairly dark to show the viewers that something may happen it also make the viewers expects something to happen thus creating tension, The audience is shown that the man in the suit is the "bad guy"/antagonist by the fact the audience is shown that he is holding a weapon and the facial expression given by Ryan Gosling only helps emphasise this, he then moves the woman out of the way in a protective manner, the way the lighting is effected is to make the woman almost stand out thus giving the audience the thought that she is important by putting her in a brighter light.

Camera and Lighting-

Camera & Lighting; The camera shots are a mix of low and mid shots, to show all the actions of the main character, using low angles it shows that he is more powerful than the man on the floor, some of the shots are longer than others, this is to build the tension and also to take the audience by surprise starting to speed up with the cuts between the shots and also it brings the attention of the audience to what the film-makers want us to see for example when there's a POV shot of Ryan Gosling looking at the gun. The lighting is lit enough to show the characters, but dark enough to not show the characters facial expressions which adds more mystery and drama to the scene, it also makes the scene harder to understand because it's harder to see the face of the characters.

3 Minutes

Camera & Lighting The shots that are used are always changing. They can vary from a mid shot, to a close up to a long shot. i think this is good because it allows the camera crew to add many different shots into the scene, i also think its good because it creates tension between the multiple shots, this makes the scene better instead of sticking with medium, close up shots they have a variant which makes the scene a lot better for the audience to watch and enjoy. Some of the most interesting shots are during the battle with the 2 characters, I feel this because again, you get a wide range of interesting shots that transitional quickly and make the scene more exciting.

The lighting introduced into this scene is quite natural. The start of the scene becomes quite dark very quickly which the two actors being in a dark garage. I feel they used this effect to show the intentions and the personality's of the two characters through the effect of lighting. The scene then begins to progress with the lighting becoming a lot brighter and a lot more natural. I think they used the natural lighting as an effect to show the audience that this scene is set in a natural outdoor environment. I think they stuck with natural lighting all the way through the scene apart from the start to show how natural the setting is and also to make it feel a little more real to the audience.

Sound
The sound used in this is a combination of non-diegetic and diegetic sound but they mainly use non-diegetic to create meaning within the short film, for example they use non-diegetic sound with background music which is used to create tension throughout it also helps with building the anticipation of who is going to win the fight between the two people, they also have the added sound effects such as the lightsabers buzzing sound they make while not being used, there's also the sound of the gunshots which make the film more realistic. And the use of diegetic sounds is limited to mostly the characters talking which is the only bit of diegetic within the film, and the sound of footsteps which doesn't sound like it was added at the end, these are the only things that sound out as diegetic sounds in this short film. Editing The editing for this short film is at set at a quick pace to match the speed of the action in the scene. When the pace of the action picks up so does the pace of the cuts. picking up the pace within the scene adds tension because it gets the audience exited. when they are fighting it cuts on action from showing the guy behind the wall hiding but the audience know he's there to a side on view of them fighting, this adds to the illusion that the fighting is real. The special effects are key in this scene because they use lightsabers to fight with, this makes futuristic and adds the mystery to where and when it was set.

Mise-En-Scene

This is a huge part of this scene with the likes of the lighting adding a huge effect to the start of the scene. E.G- The lighting on the shot of the Old Man signifies his role in this scene. The dark tone of lighting seems to represent that he is a villain in this scene. Adding to this the natural lighting throughout the scene represents the natural outdoor environment that it is in. Mise-en-scene is important in this scene for a another reason and that is props, the way the actors have conducted themselves with the props during this scene shows how big is part they were, The props represent everything in this scene as-well as telling a little it of the plot, this scene couldn't have been done to the standard it has been without the props. The props also show a good deal of what this scene is about. The make up that is on one of the characters in this scene shows that he has done a lot of fighting by the bruises to his cheek, this is a big part of Mise-en-scene because again, it shows more of the story through the what is happening visually. The main characters body language and facial expressions are a massive part too with his facial expression being very determined and ready to fight, all the way through the scene from the start till the fight, the audience knew that something bad was going to happen through the way the character conducted himself.

Game Of Thrones

Camera & Lighting

During this scene Joffrey, the king, is poisoned and the camera is switching to a mid shot of each character who is at the table, then it switches to a close-up shot showing their facial expressions and how they're reacting to what happened, this gives the audience an idea of the motives behind the characters and their feelings for example when the close-up of the old lady who was behind the poisoning seemed to look guilty, it also shows a wide shot at times to show the audience everything that is important to the scene for example like the cake being cut. The lighting is high key lighting, this is shown to be natural and like its day time which tells us that it's a normal day with the king and his servants and then he gets poisoned so its very unexpected and sudden and not many people thought it would happen. As the king is dying it goes to a close on his face to make it more emotional for the audience as it shows his last moments before he dies. Also as he was a disliked character it gives the audience a bit of satisfaction to see him die.

Sound

The sound is a mix of non-diegetic and diegetic sound, using non-diegetic sounds like the background music which plays during the dramatic scenes to add more tension in the scenes for example where Joffrey tells Tyrion to hold his cup then dramatic music starts to play which makes the audience think that something is going to happen, and also there's the added sound of the birds in the background which creates a peaceful sort of scene which is contrast to what it actually is because it's really a tense scene. The diegetic sound used in the scene isn't as noticeable as the non-diegetic sounds it's just mainly the characters talking being the most obvious of the diegetic sounds, the other being a lot less obvious like the cup being dropped on the floor and also when Joffrey starts kicking the cup which you then hear a loud ringing sound, and the sound of wine being poured, most of the diegetic sounds are simplistic.

Editing

Editing: the editing in this scene is fairly simple but is used to inspire certain feelings into the audience this is used allot by the creators to make the most intense scene possible, in the duration of this scene it is simple jump cuts and shot reverse shot's. when jeoffery asks tyrian to pick up his goblet the scene was cut in a way to show close ups of people's reactions to show how varied they are, such as Cersei's reaction makes out that she is enjoying what is going on this is used in conjunction with with the violin to make it 1) more intense and 2) to lead up to the part where tyrian refuses to kneel this is a very awkward scene to watch it was made in a way to make the audience uncomfortable it is not a easy watch since it was made so well with its camera shots and editing, firstly the angles that were used (a low angle) when recording jeoffery were used to make him seem overpowering this is used with shot reverse shot and close ups of the characters faces that make this scene so good. the final part of this scene is very dramatic since it possibly the most hated character in history dying this is done in a very well executed way, the pace in which this part is edited is used to make it erratic.

Mise-En-Scene

The mise-en-scene that is involved in this film, firstly the mise-en-scene that it is included in this scene is important because it helps describe the scene a lot better and a lot more throughly with the likes clothing, make up and props playing a huge part in the setting for this scene. Firstly the start of the scene, there is many important characters that the audience need to take note of. The first part of the scene there are many examples of mise-en-scene such as the ambient sounds of the trees blowing in the wind to the non-diegetic of the Sword leaving its sheath, i feel this works well because it allows the audience to understand some of the sounds that makes the scene a lot better in terms of building tension. Throughout the scene there is ambient, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, i feel the ambient noises of the birds singing really creates a nice background sound for the scene with the non-diegetic sound overtaking the ambient sounds with the dramatic, tension filled music, i feel this work well because the music is important to help the scene progress into what it is, a very dramatic scene, the music helps scene by moving along with how the characters are acting. Adding to this through i feel throughout the second part of the scene the make-up is very well done, especially with the death of one of the characters, it really highlights the how special and how important the mise-en-scene is for this scene, especially in comparison with 3 minutes where they have a lot of props and different lighting and sound effects, i feel this is a good comparison because the both scenes are similar in terms of they have a lot of Make-Up and props such as the guns, swords and the lightsabers.

UPDATED:
The design of the set that the characters are performing on is second to none and really helps the audience understand a lot about the people and the characters, i feel with the set and the location it can show a lot about the place and the characters that are involved, Adding to this the location can tell a lot by the characters that are involved as well as the costumes, from a fan's view i can clearly notice that the costumes for the king and queen are very different when compared with the peasants clothes, this clearly gives a strong expression of how the poorer are treated when compared with the rich, this gives a strong evaluation of the social class theory that is in every scene i have analysed. Adding to this i feel the location they have picked, is good because it is a very natural place, (outdoors, in garden) this is very important because again, it gives the natural side to the scene, it also helps the sound (birds and tree sounds)

Comparisons -

Editing
The editing in all three scenes are very simple, i feel this is good because it isn't to complex editing and it actually allows the audience to connect with the scene and allows them to focus on the scene and the emotions of the characters a bit more instead of just looking through the complex editing.

Mise En Scene- The Mise En Scene that is included in three scenes are very different. Drive and 3 Minutes are very similar in terms of there isn't as much Mise En Scene when compared with Game Of Thrones which has so much Mise En Scene in this scene alone, i feel these are so different when compared because the 2 scenes of 3 Minutes and Drive don't have a lot use of Make -Up and props.

The lighting and Camera work included in Drive when compared with the other two are very different, GAME OF THRONES is similar with 3 minutes in terms of of a bright and natural setting, i feel they have one this to show that it is in a natural environment and the audience can connect with the scene instead of it being in a made of place that the audience don't know anything about. i also feel the close ups that are included in Drive make the audience feel connected with the characters in terms of understanding what it is going on in the scene and the close ups show a gritty depiction of a true fight scene with these camera shots. They also use different lighting in drive to represent the severity of the situation. The dark lighting shows that something dark is going to happen just before they start to fight, this gives the audience a heads up on whats about to happen. In 3 minutes it is a lot more shocking because the lighting doesn't give any warnings because it a natural setting with daylight, this isn't a typical action setting therefor it doesn't indicate to the audience what is gong to happen. In Game Of Thrones the weather in the background indicates what is coming because it is windy and getting stormy. This builds up the intensity because the weather is corresponding with the action within the scene (when the weather picks up so does the intensity of the action).

Sound-
The sound of each scene are very similar with each having diagetic sound and also having a lot of Non-diagetic sound, i feel by transitioning between the two it really gives the sound of the scenes a lot that you can differentiate from, also the sound helps with what is going on in the scene, it makes the audience relate to what is happening with the characters in the certain scenes.
