Unit 24 Script Writing

What does a writer do? (commissioning process)

A writer is in charge of the script, thats there biggest role. this is a huge role because being in charge of the script has a huge responsibility throughout the film, they take care of the script and make sure the story is good enough. This isn't there only role though, they have many other roles throughout the production such as advising the director(s) and crew, this is a huge role because a writer is one of the most important crew members, having the writer on set is very important for the success of the film/series.
A writer has many roles that includes the script, firstly the most important role is being in charge of the actual script, the writer edits the scripts and makes sure it is good enough to be made into a film, the writers are very important because the whole story depends on them and what they write in the script. They're in charge of production planning, this is everything that needs to be done before the actual filming.

Writer resubmission:

In the script they're certain shots that will need to be accomplished to achieve the certain scene that they want, the writer of the script can help and advise on these shots and give his/hers opinions on how to get them and also try and improve camera shots. Sometimes it is unbelievably important to get a certain shot into the film because it could relate back to source information E.G comic books, camera shots are used to copy images that are in the comics. Depending on what they've written in the script, they could be in charge of some props and mise en scene, especially if they want them a certain way, a film like Mad Max:Fury Road the two other writers apart from Director George Miller could advise the crew who are in charge of props depending on if there is something specific the writer wants, maybe a small detail on the clothes or make-up that could make it more accurate to the script.

They're some negatives when being a writer, for example, writers don't get as much credit as they should do, considering they are in charge of the script and actually write the script, when you look at the cast the average audience will not look at the writer, they will look at the director and possibly the producer to give credit to, this is where i feel writers aren't given enough credit for there work, writers in the commissioners process deserve more credit for there work, this is a huge negative if you're a writer because you want to be given credit for your work so you can be more successful in the future and are able to have more job opportunities in the future. Adding to this i feel they're not credited enough for there work, for example they're there from the pre-production to the post production and they make sure that there ideas are converted onto television or film, because they have such as big role but don't get enough credit to the average target audience it stop them being as known as big directors or musical composers Furthermore, the negatives you could have when being a writer is, you could have disputes with the director over creative freedom and over what the writer wants to include over what the director whats, but this depends on the personalities of the writer and the director.

What does a producer do?
The producer is the glue of the whole production, without the producer the film would not happen at all, the producer makes sure all of the crew are working to the best of there ability and has a role when choosing the script.
Producers- Producers are the main players in the television, film and video industries. A producer will oversee each project from conception to completion and may also be involved in the marketing and distribution processes. Producers work closely with directors and other production staff on the shoot. Increasingly, they need to have directing skills themselves as the producer may also be the director and may take care of all project operations. Producers arrange funding for each project and are responsible for keeping the production within the allocated budget. A producer will also help bring ideas to the table when creating the film and can give his/her opinion to film set, whether it is script, shots or filming.
A producer is very important because they will take care of the budget for the film, that means budget for props, make up and all thing that add up to Mise En scene, as well as renting the cameras and locations, marketing is huge in a producers job because they handle the marketing budget but also how it's done, the producer will make sure the marketing is done correctly and the film markets itself well enough to be successful at the box office. A film like Deadpool that has terrific marketing had well known producers because they had done box office hits before, this is why a film like this was so successful all together because the marketing of the film was superb. A producer is an integral part of the crew and probably the most important and actually have the most important job, without the producer i feel films wouldn't be nearly as good and there would be no marketing for the films at all.

Overall, a producer is the most important crew member and has the ability to create new ideas and make the production better, has the ability to change the script (if the director wants it changed). they can have certain abilities when on set and jobs that they can help with such as camera movements, adjustment during shooting stage and other production jobs that could include the producer.

Agent Representation-

An agent is a person in the media industry that makes sure that a person(s) have work, are successful in the media industry an Agent normally works for Directors, actors or actresses and writers, they mostly help them when trying to find jobs etc.

Agents represent writers whether freelance or not, the reason they have are to make sure they have work all the time, agents are important when looking after a writer and the jobs they get. The amount of pay the agent gets depends on how much the client and the agent agree, whether it is 15% or 25%, if a writer sells a script or works in a crew, the agent will be given a percentage depending on how much they agree in there deal. Some publishing companies or even film companies wont hire a writer unless they have an agent, having a well known an experienced agent will help when finding jobs, because they will more experienced and professional in their field. For example, a writer with an agent will more than likely get a bigger and better paying job, than somebody who doesn't have an agent. Adding to this not having an agent may be hard, but could be beneficial for a freelance writer or if you don't want to be tied down by an agent, having an agent all depends on what kind of work do you want and your opinion.

Agents have many responsibilities when helping a writer become more successful, there main jobs as an agent is to defend, help and support the writer when looking for work and too also promote them to film companies and places where they can possibly get a job. An agent could be in charge of the writers public image and the way they're represented in the media, the agent will make sure no bad press or information is leaked about them.

Royalty Payments:

Royalty Payments are payments towards the writer(s) from the use of the script, from books or films, the writer will get a percentage of the sale, for each book sold that has the writers script or ideas in he/she will get a percentage of each one sold, the same goes for films or use of the script, when writing for a film, the writer will possibly get a larger percentage depending on how successful the film is and the contract that the studio and the agent have agreed. The payments that the writer get definitely vary depending on success or failure of the project. Depending on what you're writing, royalties can vary and be very different, if it is music royalties, writers, composers and singers can all have royalty rights for there music and can own the rights to the song, this is why many people create Royalty free music that can be used free of charge without having to go through big companies to get music that could be expensive or costly. A writer for a film could make more money when the film they worked on is released in Cinemas or Blu-Ray and will make money on ticket prices or sales of the film.

Royalties can be awkward for the writer and could sometimes work against them depending on the studio, especially if the script the writer worked on is sold to the production company, because if the company doesn't use the script after purchasing it, the writer isn't allowed the re-sell the script or sell it to a different production company because technically it isn't there any more, this is a why a agent should always be present for these negotiations so a deal that benefits the writer and the studio can be put in place. When a film is re-made from an old script, money will still go to the writer that first wrote the original script for the film or the living relatives will strike a deal if they want to sell the script.

Writers can sometimes get cheated out of a contract and not getting enough pay for all there hard work, this is quite a regular occurrence. As i said before about music royalties, if a song is over 70 years old they don't have to pay for the royalties of the song, so the studio don't actually lose out on any money whatsoever when they have that song on there film/show.

Plagiarism-
Plagiarism is the idea of copying or stealing somebodies work that obviously isn't yours, this is done in all industries but more the Education system and the Music and film industry, when a channel, production company or studio find a freelance or a small writer who have great ideas and a unknown, the studio can copy or plagiarise there work because they're so unknown.

Adding to this plagiarising is becoming a growing issue in the industry and continues to haunt smaller writers, especially because they will more than likely not have the money to start a case.

In any industry plagiarism is committed a lot unfortunately because it is highly illegal but could also cause problems for the industry, many Hollywood studios have admitted to plagiarised work or even copied scripts from smaller, unknown writers. It is definitely frowned upon due to the nature of it and what kind of affects is can have on certain people such as the writer, if a writers work has been copied there are certain things he/she can do, the first thing is obviously take legal action, but it isn't always that simple, big studio companies can afford huge lawyers and pay a lot of money to avoid controversy's, so when a smaller, freelance writer tests them and tries to sue the bigger, more powerful and rich company is always going to come on top and unfortunately this has happened many times and they have gotten away with it because the freelance writers just cant afford to build a case against the studio that have plagiarised there work.

Overall, In many countries plagiarism is illegal, but if it isn't illegal in a certain country, copyright sure is, so if the studio doesn't get sued for plagiarism they will more than likely get sued for copyright, this can be a very serious offence depending on what it is.

Watershed:

The watershed is a system where TV shows or films with adult content such as swearing, violence or sexual scenes can be shown after a certain time, this system was put into place so after a certain time shows with more adult themes could be shown and parents know when these are on and there children will not watch them. These types of shows that are on after the watershed tend to have various adult themes that definitely wouldn't be acceptable at a earlier time.

If a writer had his/her script shown in a TV show or Film before the watershed there could be certain repercussions for the studio and the writer. If the show showed graphic content that could possibly offend they may get a warning or if this has happened multiple times it could possibly lead to legal action. There has been certain shows that are on before 9pm that contain graphic content such as Holby City and certain 12+ rated shows that are on at 6pm such as The Simpsons. The watershed is so important for writers because if they want to add graphic content to there script they have to think about the time there script could possibly be shown on TV, George RR Martin couldn't show Game Of Thrones before the watershed because it includes graphic content in the script, if he wanted to show Game Of Thrones before the watershed he would have to take out a lot of it and replace it with more 'family friendly' scenes.

I feel the watershed works against writers because if you want your idea to be put fourth as a TV show and the script has nudity or any type of graphic content in, your slot in which your script can be shown will be a lot more competitive because there is a shorter time 9pm-12pm rather than before the watershed is shown 6am-9pm.

Overall i feel that the watershed is needed because it separates the graphic content from the family friendly content such as Doctor Who that is on not long before the watershed, adding to this i think we need the watershed because it is there to protect a younger audience from graphic content that could possibly cause harm them. Furthermore, the watershed is needed for writers so as soon as they start writing the script they know where there content is going to be shown and what time. I think it is a great idea because it helps the studio's separate the graphic content from the family friendly content.
