UNIT 24 RESEARCH DIARY SCRIPT

Scripting:
To start off my research i decided to look at Daily Script, this website uploads only the highest quality of scripts from movies and TV Shows. I wanted to find a script that may match the same style as mine, i chose Gone Girl script because i feel the script relates to my script and i can actually use this as an example. Firstly i will use this because of the way it is narrated by actor Ben Affleck and actress Rosamund Pike,  I found this script online, i feel that it relates to my ideas in my script because i want a sense of storytelling through some sort of narration done by the characters, throughout the script, they have EXT. and INT, these words signify where the scene is taking place, these are instructions on ALL scripts to show the audience where the scene is going to take place.

I have also picked Gone Girl because of how much i enjoy the style of the script and how the story is told,i feel the use of narration could really evolve my story and make it a lot better than without a voice-over, i feel it would because the voice-over is another way to talk to the audience. What i love about this scene underneath is the simplicity of it but yet it is very complex to understand, during this scene, there is raw emotion and a dark side to the characters.

Gone Girl (more info)
The reason why i have chosen this script, is for many reasons, firstly i love the narrative and the book it is based upon, the story catches the audience and the narrative creates distress and thrills for the audience, i love the way the script is set out and told in the movie, the character development is strong and tense, throughout the movie and when reading the script, you can feel the characters changing and becoming more darker throughout the script, i love the techniques they have used in this script such as the characters becoming darker and the way the script is set out by using a voice-over. the voice-over helps to portray the characters in a more darker way as the characters will talk to the audience almost like a psychiatrist. One of my other favourite techniques that i enjoyed when reading the script and watching the movie is there use of suspense throughout the script, they use suspense when the characters are leaving clues for the main character, the reason why i feel this is a great technique is because they keep the audience in suspense and involved in the narrative.

INT. BEDROOM -
SOMETIME We see the back of AMY DUNNE’S HEAD, resting on a pillow.

NICK (V.0.)
I picture cracking her lovely skull, unspooling her brain, Nick runs his fingers into Amy’s hair.

NICK (V.0.)
Trying to get answers. He twirls and twirls a lock, a screw tightening.

NICK (V.0.)
The primal questions of a marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? What have we done to each other?

We see in this narration that the voice-over is very graphic and detailed, they have set the narration out this way so the audience can have more of a connection with what the characters are talking about and really understand there emotions, i feel they have used narration so the characters are talking to the audience, almost as if the characters know the audience and are in the same room as the narrator. I like the way this scene is introduced because it almost feels as if the character and the audience are just talking as friends or in a friendly manor, but when the narrator gets into the details in turns into a graphic, detailed explanation of murder.

I intend to mirror my script to GONE GIRL'S script for many reasons, firstly is the obvious use of a voice-over or narrator, i want to use a narration so the story actually speaks to the audience. I want the main character to talk to the audience as if he's speaking to a therapist or somebody he trusts.

American Psycho:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LsmHe2Zzg4l0vFbPHpXp1DjIHx44SeMrywtMIk10-tg/edit?usp=sharing
My second script i am going to look at is American Psycho, they're many reasons why i have picked this, the first big reason is the way the narrative and the script is set out as a Horror and a Thriller, with elements as comedy in it, i love the way this is set out because it doesn't follow the typical conventions of a Horror because it includes black comedy. They use comedy to portray characters a different way even if they're villains or not particularly likeable characters. In this script the main character is portrayed as a violent, angry character but with the use of comedy elements,he then turns into a narcissistic psychopath with a dark sense of humour, so comedy can change the audience's outlook of a character just by how is personality is described and the way he is portrayed on the film.

Furthermore, American Psycho shows a character struggling with his mind and real life, it shows the reality of  dealing with a mental Illness in a very darker tone and that is clear in the narrative. One of the biggest reasons why i have took inspiration from this script to use in my narrative is because American Psycho is one of my favourite films and in my opinion one of the best scripts ever written, based on a book just like Gone Girl, i feel these make for the best scripts because they have something to base the script of which makes it easier for the writer/film-makers because it's easier// more convenient for them when writing something with research/information written about it, this means the film-makers can focus more on the quality when filming.

I got this script from Daily Scripts, just like Gone Girl, i picked this website to find my scripts because i feel they're the most reliable and it is the easiest to use when finding scripts.

We see in this script, just like Gone Girl it has a very detailed narration, although the quotes from this script isn't graphic, it gives a very thorough and detailed description of his 'routine', these two scripts i have chosen are very similar in the style i want to do my script, narration for my script will be vital when telling the story, because in American Psycho he addresses the audience almost like he is talking to them about his routine, although i want my narration to be a little different because i want my character to be addressing his problems and what he has done to the audience, i feel i can take a lot of inspiration from both scripts when im creating mine.

The location for this script will be different to mine, because of how the narrative is set out, he is stationed in a city (New York City), although i don't want my narrative to be set in a huge City because that wouldn't fit my characters personality's, my location is going to be based in a small town with not many new faces and a small population, i feel this would be a great location because of it being a small town away from the city, almost a very lonely town, i want that to the reflect my characters emotions, adding to this i feel the small town would fit the narrative and the characters involved.

Factual Infomation:

When writing a factual script, the writer needs to make sure all information they gather about the certain period is correct, if it isn't correct critics could tear it apart for not being accurate. For Example a show such as 11.22.63 that is set in the 1960's is a good example, if the mise en scene is wrong or inaccurate in this show critics and fans could be angry because of the show not being accurate to that certain time period. This show was based on a book by Stephen King, if this book didn't follow accurate information from that era, or the show-runners changed the Mise en scene or costumes, it may put viewers of from watching because it wouldn't show them an accurate representation of that era.

For example- In the first episode we meet characters from 1960's driving, spending time with other characters and having fun, if Stephen King didn't research what life was like in the 60's his historical representation may have been very different to the accurate representation of the 1960's youth. Adding to this, the accurate representation involved in this narrative makes this show so successful because of the way it sticks to the years it's set in and stays in the time era. Stephen King made sure the way they dress, act and how the scenes are set out in the script reflect the era.  Adding to this, if Stephen King wrote the book, he would have had some creative control when working with the Mise en scene and the characters involved due to him creating them.

Factual information is very important because the information could mean make or break for a show, if the Mise en scene isn't correct when creating the show the audience won't believe that the film or TV program depicts an actual representation of that era.

Due to my narrative have issues such as PTSD and its got a character who is a war veteran, i will need to find and collect detailed research about PTSD and what people can go through such as anger, violence or episodes of other emotions, i feel when using these types  of issues in my narrative i will need to do a lot of research to make sure i get my factual information correct so my narrative doesn't offend anybody or uses improper information that could depict something bad or possibly glorifying something that could be seen as bad. When doing my research i will make sure i tackle these difficult topics because they're important so the narrative can progress and so the script looks realistic when i'm telling these problems through the eyes of the characters who are suffering from them.

The trailer i have linked is the trailer for 11/22/63, the reason why i have chosen this as my example is because i feel the mise en scene and the locations for this narrative depict the era the way it actually was, due to it based on a book they have a lot of information that could be used to help, but the set designers and costume department have done a fantastic job to make it look like the 1960's, this would be tricky and difficult to do, especially for the long panning shots of the cities or a long shot of a bridge with retro cars et. The writers clearly put a lot of effort into making sure the settings they filmed in and the locations and characters involved looked unbelievably authentic and it looked like the 1960's,if the characters didn't look authentic, I feel it wouldn't be worth watching because they wouldn't have put the research or effort into the Mise En Scene or the costumes.

Opinion:
I feel it is important when writing a script to address the public's opinion because if your script gets made into a film/Tv Show the public will be the people who are watching it, by gathering information on what the public feel would be good you can get more knowledge about there opinions and what they would want to be included in your script, this is vital because the public in the end decides if your show or film is good or not and they're who bring money in to the studio and to the writer, adding to this i feel it is important because by doing research with the public you can then address your target audience a little bit more for your script.

It is obvious that you have to consider the executives too, after all they're who you're pitching your idea to, when pitching your idea it is very important to consider the executives because they're who are going to give you the big budget to bring your script to life, without them your script is just words, the executives  can make your script come to life. Its important to make sure that you make a good impression with your script so they accept it and give you the budget you need to make a movie/Tv Show out of your script, if executives feel your idea isn't suitable (depending on the studio) they will not take it on as a project because they feel it might hurt the studio or may not be successful, it is important to impress the executives with confidence because studio's look for confidence when pitching your idea so they know your 100% confident with what you have and you know what you're doing. Adding to this, i feel it is important to consider there opinion because they will know what's best for the project to make it successful, so the executives may change things to the script and may give you some advice on changing it to fit a certain target audience more or to make the script fit a little better if they think it could improve the project, they may give advice on casting options or crew advice, it is important to take there opinions and advice because the executives will ultimately know what's best for the project.

In my opinion, i feel it has to be 50/50, the reason why i think this is you have to have a balance when it comes to who's opinion matters, public opinion ALWAYS matter because that's who is buying the finished product, but the executives opinions matter because they can help you project up and running and they can actually give you a budget, so i feel you have to have a mixture of who's opinion matter, the public's opinion matter just as  much as the Executives and vice versa, a project needs to a have a mixture to become successful.

Controversy can be dangerous when pitching your script to anybody never mind the Executives, If a writer includes controversial topics in his/hers script, it could lead to many things such as less success  (if they even take the project on), if they agree to take your script on, they may change the controversial bits because it may not fit the target audience or the script might be changed or altered so it doesn't offend certain audiences, E.G if a script had racist remarks in, they may cut it out to avoid the controversy that comes with it. An example of a very controversial film is A Clockwork Orange, based on the book of the same name, this movie includes themes of violence and rape and possible racism, this film is possibly the most controversial film of all time with the director even banning it from Theatres and having to go on a vacation because of backlash because he was afraid of his life being threatened, this film was very controversial because of the themes surrounding it.

Speculation:
When looking at speculation around TV or film, many rumours come out but many are proven or in fact true, many reporters and magazine speculate what is going to be happening in the next episode. One great example is The Walking Dead, in a recent episode the speculation was around character Glen and the title was 'Did Glen Die?' this had huge speculation because the writers left the episode on a huge cliffhanger, an the audience had to wait 3 months until the winter break ended, this meant a lot of rumours and speculation was written about just this one character, this happens a lot because people love to talk about what's going to happen next week and everybody loves to debate and speculate what's going to happen next week this happens on TV and Film.

A plot twist like this keeps the audience on there toes and it stops the show from getting stale or boring, it keeps the show gaining viewers each week and builds there fan base, plot twists brings diversity to the show and by changing the narrative it allows new characters and relationships to evolve. For Example, After 'Glens Death' his wife in the show accepted his death and was beginning to move on, but when he came back they feel back in love again, by creating these plot twists it also allows emotional connections to be seen and characters to change depending on the narrative.

I think i will leave a cliff hanger in mine, depending on how i feel when i start to write my narrative i feel because it is a 10 minute script, a cliffhanger would be great to finish it off, i would like my cliffhanger to focus on the woman in my story and possibly leave the audience wondering what happened to her, did she survive? did she get away from her violent husband? i will choose how i will develop my ending depending on if i have any further ideas when writing my script, i feel this is a good way to plan a script out because i will let my ideas flow when writing the script instead of planning ever little detail before hand.

I think cliffhangers are great for a popular TV shows or Films especially if they have a huge fan-base such as Marvel,DC, Game Of Thrones or The Walking Dead, TV provides a stage for cliffhangers to be set, they tend to be done so the next series sets out straight after so you can see what happened just after, i feel this is great because by leaving where it just went off the audience feels like they haven't missed a thing almost like the next season is a straight continuation and not a new series but just another episode.

Existing Material:
There is a lot of existing material i will use such as interviews and reports as well as scripts, we have looked at the two scripts i like and i am using as examples to base my script of but because my narrative heavily involves PTSD and Domestic violence i thought it may be best if i was to get some real life stories and information about these issues, so i did some research an found two compelling stories that i could base some ideas off and hopefully transform them into ideas that will be appreciated in my script. Here are my two examples

http://www.channel4.com/news/domestic-violence-katys-story

I did my own research when looking at my script, i completed this by asking a 5 question survey to people who i know and who i feel would give great answers, the answers i got back when my survey had been answered varied, firstly the males said they like crime films and horrors more than women who said they like Romance and Romance-Comedies, this was very interesting research because the males sided to more violent genres rather than the women that went for more softer and gentler genres, i feel this has helping me because i can identify who my genre and script is catered to a little bit more, adding to this i feel my genre for my script could cater for both males and females because the females answered saying that they also like Thrillers, so i feel some females may like my script and narrative because it caters to Drama, hints of romance and Thriller, because i intend on using three different genres, i feel it gives me a bigger target audience to work with which might work in my favour but could also be very tricky because i have to cater to three different audience's needs.  Both Male and Female all had very different answers which helps me that both male and female would love my film because it has elements of different genres, adding to this i feel my narrative and script will cater to many because i wont follow the typical conventions of one certain genre, i will think outside the box to make my narrative and script exciting and very different.  When asking the question of my survey, i asked if they would watch a controversial film, many of them said yes, i feel this is because controversy draws people n and is very exciting in films, it raises questions and debates, i feel by making my script controversial, it can raise questions around the taboo themes that i have included. Adding to this by adding a controversial topic by script and narrative will stray away from the typical conventions of my genre's.

Secondary Research:
My secondary research includes 2 scripts, i feel these scripts fit my narrative perfect because they're twisted and have some detailed and graphic writing inside them,, i feel these are great because i want to mirror them both because they both include great ideas, such as the narration and the fantastic dialogue as he talks to the audience. I have taken ideas from these two scripts because i want me protagonist to be almost talking to the audience, therefore by using these two scripts as examples i can take ideas for them in terms of voice-over dialogue. My second piece of research i did was into other Thrillers from different eras and i saw how they changed (typical conventions etc) i found that conventions for genres change over time, due to me not following the typical conventions of the latest thrillers, i though it was useful to note what conventions are not used any more and possibly make the most out of them, for example in the film PSYCHO, during the Murder Shower Scene they don't show the murderers face at all, i like this effect because it then gives character mystery and leads the audience down a dark path throughout the movie, almost like a detective you the audience has t find out who committed the murder.

Evaluation:
Both Primary research and Secondary was very useful because they both allowed me to figure out my target audience more but also gather more information on different genre's that my narrative and plot could possibly fit in, My secondary research has helped because i have identified what scripts COULD be similar to mine, and ones i could mirror or take inspiration from, i feel this is really going to help me when creating ideas because i can use some conventions them scripts have used in there dialogue. The main highlights of research that helped me was the research on the scripts and the research for my factual information such as my research into domestic violence and PTSD, i feel this information really helped me build a more graphic idea for my narrative and actually helped me to build upon the idea i already had, by reading these accounts from real people it helped me connect with there problems, which means that i will have more compassion and be more careful when writing about controversial subjects so i am careful not to offend my target audience.

Due to my idea being a Thriller and that genre is popular i found my research very easy because all the information i wanted was easy to get, even my factual information, that was easy to get because although a taboo subject it is big on the internet and in the news so i felt not many parts of the research was difficult more time consuming than anything, i felt it was time consuming because i wanted to get every factual bit of detail right for my  story to make it as realistic as possible, i think that realism in my story is important so when reading my script the audience can connect with the characters and there emotions.  The only difficult part of it i thought was finding the correct genre and story i wanted to right, i feel this is the most difficult part of any type of writing because the idea has got to a good plot and it has to be interesting, i went through many genres, Sci-fi,Action and even Romance! I think i found my perfect genre in Thriller because it allows me to use my imagination when using my description in the dialogue for my characters.

Overall i feel my plot, characters and narrative is really well put together and it should make out for an interesting story, all the research i have done is going to be great when i start to write and put my characters and the narrative together.

My script is going to be very graphic and dark, the reason why i feel this would be great is because, i feel this type of writing will be good when looking at the topics in my script such as Domestic violence, sexual violence and PTSD, these types of topics are controversial and tend to or be scene in movies or scripts, i feel my script will fit with these topics and will be good when using descriptive writing skills when writing about these topics. I will do my best to accurately describe these types of topics because i want the audience to feel the same emotions as the character is doing. This will be important when writing my script because the ore descriptive it is the more the audience will feel emotionally connected with the characters.
