SWOT ANALYSIS

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1ZxOJhUwfVqczg3cUFxOGR3bUE/view

SWOT ANALYSIS FOR: Film Director

Strengths:

Strengths that I have that I may have to use to accomplish my mission and dream to become a Film Maker/ Director will be the following.

Strength 1: Leadership Skills

This would be a huge part in becoming a director due to the amount of people I will have to manage and work with, i also feel that when I am directing films i will have to take charge of many people and help them with there jobs such as the Producer, Assistant Director and Editor, I may haver to work with the editor to see if all the camera shots, clips and techniques I have used all fit and make the narrative of the film fit well amongst the viewers and audience.

Leadership is one of the biggest strengths to have when it comes to being in the film industry due to how much preparation and work it takes to direct a film.

Strength 2: Creativity

This is possibly the biggest and most important strength you need to become a successful and popular director, i feel my creative skill-set when making a film would be vital to the success of the film, It is so important to be creative when making a film due to it opening new ideas and topics that a person who isn't creative wouldn't think about.  When being creative on set of a film the narrative of the film will become stronger and more influential to the actors who are starring in the film, if you have a creative and strong narrative it will be portrayed better through the actors. This is one of my biggest strengths due to me having a lot of creativity and being able to make films and projects enjoyable and very good.

Weakness 1: Organisation

My biggest weakness i feel is my organisation skills can be improved upon due to a lack of time and not being prepared, this is a thing that drastically needs work because organisation skills are required in media/ directorial work, as it does in everything therefore organisation skills are vital as this shows my presentation skills when working as a director. Organisation is a massive weakness for me and if I don't improve on this in a whole I will definitely not become a successful director, organisation is needed when becoming a director due to you having to organise a set of people as well as yourself.

Weakness 2:  Stubbornness-

Stubbornness is a thing i need to improve on quite a lot due to me always wanting my own ideas to happen and always wanting my own way, This, i need to improve on because although a team player, I have to learn to trust peoples ideas and not just go for my ideas all the time. I will do this by listening to peoples ideas more instead of being selfish and always using my ideas for projects.
This is important for me to improve on due to it being a huge weakness to my game I will that by improving this I can listen to people's ideas more effectively and they can be put into place faster and in a creative style. When i don't listen to people's ideas it stops the creativity flowing though the team/crew and maybe work won't be done to the highest level and to the best of all of our abilities

Opportunities- Travelling

Travelling is a massive opportunity when it comes to being  director, when making films you will travel all over the world for sets and places to film, this is a huge pro and a big opportunity when it comes to the job role I want to have. I feel this is a great and massive opportunity due to the places you can go and travel too.

Opportunities- Money

Money is a huge factor when becoming a Film Director, it is massively important to your lifestyle, also how well you direct and complete your films will determine your wage. When directing films and if they were do become successful i would have a much higher wage than a director who makes a film and it isn't as successful.

Opportunities- Fame

Fame is a massive opportunity when becoming a film director because it is very much possible that it could happen, I also feel this is an amazing opportunity for me to take as it allows me to make more money, become a lot more popular and to be able to attract the biggest actors and stars to the films I will be going to make.

Threats- Competitive field

When becoming a Film Director you have got to look at how competitive the field of work you are doing is, they're thousands of different directors out there, mainstream and not mainstream who are trying to make it big and be popular, successful directors, Film Directing is very competitive and a difficult field of work due to you having to be the best of the best in the work that you do. I feel this is my biggest threat due to how big of a job i will have to complete.

Threat- Career Advancement

I feel this is a big threat due to effecting my career. I need to think how I can advance my career as a Film Director onto the next level and what I can do to make it big in the media industry. I will need to think long term when thinking about this topic, many people who try and make it into the industry only think short term and don't succeed because they don't think about the future of themselves or there job.

Threat- Long Hours

I feel this is a more irrelevant one due too me being able to work long hours anyway, but this could be tricky sometimes if we need to change location or move sets, working long hours is a threat but not a large one because I am able to work under pressure on long hours to complete deadlines.

2 advert analysis

SKY ADVERT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib9d_EJlovg

I thought this advert was most appropriate to do due to SKY being a huge contender with TALKTALK in terms of sales on there product/s.

Firstly, I would just like to point out some small but key aspects of this advert such as the family themed idea, We will be using the family orientated idea as a platform for numerous other ideas we might have in the future. We are going to be sticking with the family theme throughout the advert to try and give the audience and sense of well-being when watching the advert and the family to be able to relate to the family in the advert. Due to it being an alternative to the X FACTOR TALK-TALK ADVERT we still want to attract a much younger audience and an audience that did watch X-FACTOR to see the advert itself. We want to reiterate what our message is about throughout the advert.

Like I've said the Characters we would use would much likely be a family, Father, Mum, Son and Daughter are the most likely candidates because we want to make the character choice equal on both parts, also we have difference scenarios for each character that do involve TALK-TALK whether it is TALK-TALK internet or its someone watching T.V we would include these to tell the audience about the wide range of packages you can get if you do purchase TALK-TALK. The different scenarios would be things such as: Dad at work uses TALK-TALK, Mum at home watching something on TALK-TALK Tele Box and the Son maybe playing video games or surfing the Internet and the only way he can do that is by using TALK-TALK and then at the end we have a come together of everybody in the Living Room, these are just some of the scenarios or segments we could do during our advert to express how you would use some of the services at TALK TALK and why is it so good.

Structure- I feel the structure of the advert is very simple when it comes to how the logo and how the text is displayed, although a simple size and colour the text stands out at the end when it is displayed on the screen "HERE'S TO A CHRISTMAS FULL OF MAGIC" in this sentence CHRISTMAS is purposely emphasised  so people know what this avert is about and the message it is trying to send.

We we use some quite popular advertising techniques such as:

Stacking:  list of reasons why the product or service is good
I feel Stacking is a great technique to use due to its simplicity, its very easy to understand and for this technique to work you don't need to put a lot of work into the advert when using this technique.

Slogan:  identifies product or service with an idea
This is a good technique because again, its simple and easy to do, all you have to do is to come up with a short catchy slogan that fits with your product and you will start to attract an audience.

Logo:  identifies product or service with a symbol
The log is massively important when attracting an audience to your product and luckily TALK-TALK have a great simple logo that everybody knows and everybody has heard of.

Snob Appeal:  associates product or service with a personality or lifestyle
This a great for our product because we want to be able to associate TALK-TALK with peoples lives so they are persuaded into buying it, like we have said by making it family orientated we are connecting with a massive audience by doing this we can connect TALK-TALK to the family lifestyle.

Cause and Effect:  use this product or service and your problems will disappear
This is a clever one to choose as a technique for our advert due to it being a technology based service as well as offering multiple internet services, as we all know we all have internet problems by advertising TALK-TALK internet services, if we advertise that buying this super-fast TALK-TALK internet service will get rid of your slow internet people are more likely to buy it.

Price Appeal:  consumers will be getting something extra for less money
This is an easy and simple method once again that only involves a character talking about the product in a persuasive way, if we was to advertise the product and talk about how cheap when compared to how much you are getting for your money and get the audience to connect with the advert, you will have a lot of customers wanting to purchase your product.

Plain Folks:  the advertiser tries to identify its product with common people just like you.
This is an absolute must use technique when filming our advert because we want the audience to connect with you on a social level and you also want them to relate to what you have got to say because if they can relate to what you say they will more than likely trust you and believe what you are saying.

I feel this is going to massively influence us when making our advert due to it being so heavily linked with family and family themed topics, I feel we can take a lot of things from looking at this advert such as how it has been produced and centred completely around family which we need to do with our advert.

T-MOBILE
Firstly, I would like to mention that this advert has differences and similarities when compared with the SKY ADVERT. I would like to start with the differences, I feel the biggest difference is that it is not family orientated like the SKY ADVERT, due to our advert being based around family, I feel this is a big factor when choosing ideas and gaining inspiration from adverts that specifically would benefit our advertisement in a positive manor. This advertisement introduced in 2009 by T-MOBILE although not based around a family, like the first advert it gives the audience of the advert a sense of well being when watching the advert for the first time.

The characters are very different when compared with the SKY ADVERT, in the SKY advert you see a family and a small amount of characters. When compared with advert 2 the characters are on a much larger scale and the audience cannot connect with them on a level that you can on the first advert, although you cannot connect with them on a much larger scale, on a smaller scale you can due to them being working class people in a busy train-station, i feel this helps you connect with the characters and the advert a little bit more because many of the audience members will be working class people. In addition to this, the comedic value is much easier to understand because the working class audience can relate to the working class characters.

Narrative- In this advert i feel that there is not a full explanation of what the narrative is about. In my opinion, its not as much a story as the first advert i analysed where it actually has characters in it.

Conventions

Characters- Silly comical fighting style,

Camera work- long shots to show characters physical movements when fighting the bear

lighting- the lighting was natural and in daylight due to being out in the open and quite normal lighting for a comedy

surreal-fighting a bear for the John West Salmon implying that it is that good

the sounds are natural and normal sounds

setting- unorthodox setting for a comedy scene instead of City, forest near a river.

My own chosen advert - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyRvzeNuqa4

Characters - Average working class people trying to make a living comes in contact with panda, very silly funny and slapstick comedy, turning how pandas are on its head and changing the way you look at them.

Setting - normal city places, offices, supermarket and hospital, Typical comedy setting, They used these places to represent that everybody (working class) can buy PANDA MILK and they also used these settings to represent the normality of it.

The sounds- Music in the background with (ambient sounds) voices, telephones and footsteps. I feel they used these types of day - to - day sounds because it represents that it is a average 'monday morning day'

Lighting- the lighting is very normal and day - to - day lighting effects in public places so no need for extra lighting. Also i feel they did this because it is a comedy advert and extra lighting would possibly ruin the effect that the advert is trying to give off.

Costume- the costumes are very normal, apart from the Panda costume, i feel they used the panda costume because normally Panda's are soft and calm animals but in this advert they made it ironic and different and made the Panda angry and confrontational towards the people that wont drink the PANDA MILK.

My chosen advert- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XRUSWuCiis

Characters- The characters of the dramatic advert are normally relationships between each character whether it's family, love or a relationship with an object. In this advert the relationship is between the player and the football boot, the eagle represents the football boot again just like the comedy advert it changes your perception of what a football boot is like by representing it as a an animal (eagle)

Setting- The setting is not too visible but what you do see is that its in a field somewhere (preferably Germany, due to the Football players they have used) I feel the setting is natural and rural for a reason and its to represent the eagle and the habitat it lives in.

The sounds- The music and the ambient sounds are massive parts of making this advert look and sound interesting. The ambient sounds such as the noise of the thunder at the start really sets the dramatic tone for the rest of the advert. The beats during the advert are big and move along with the advert making it sound more effective and a better viewing for the audience.

Lighting- The lighting for this piece is very dark and every scene is edited to grey, i feel this is more a good editing effect but could also blend in with the lighting, This worked so well because along with the music it sets the scene for a good, strong advert. It also makes it much more dramatic and intense when looking at the advert.

Costumes- They use normal and average football kits for this advert and it works well because it is straight to the point and the viewer realises straight away what it is about, also the costume fits, again perfectly with what the music video is about.

EARLY FILM- NO TECHNIQUES OR NO FILM CONVENTIONS (1900s)
(180 DEGREE RULE | CONTINUITY EDITING)

1960s - TECHNIQUES USED TO CREATE MEANING

1990s- BIRTH OF DIGITAL EDITING MADE FILMMAKING ACCESSIBLE

PRESENT DAY - CGI BECOMES COMMON PLACE (MONSTERS)

Surreal Analysis-

Characters - Average working class people resting in the GYM come in contact with Old Spice Body wash, use body wash and changes there appearance. Very funny, silly witty humour.

Setting - Normal 'City' place (GYM) Typical setting for a comedy scene, They used this place to represent that everybody (working class) can buy OLD SPICE BODY WASH and they also used this setting to represent the normality of it.

The sounds- There is no music in this advert only sound effects of the cracking at the Motorbike noises, I feel they haven't used music because it would ruin the atmosphere around the advert itself.

Lighting- The lighting is very normal and  has a day - to - day lighting effect its also in a public place so no need for extra lighting. Also i feel they did this because it is a comedy advert and extra lighting would possibly ruin the effect that the advert is trying to give off.

Costume- The costumes are very normal, due to it being in a GYM hey are using sports wear, after the transformation of the characters you see the costumes are very different due to the body wash transforming them into the opposite of what there characters were before. The character transformation is vital for the advert to succeed in what it is selling.

Target audience- I feel the target audience of this advert is not situated to any type of audience, i feel it is for everybody to enjoy and watch due to the topic and theme surrounding this advert.

I feel the DRAMATIC ADVERT is the best out of the 3 due to the topic and how they have got there point across with there idea. In addition to this i feel the way this has been directed is superb, also the camera techniques they have used to make it more dramatic and action packed, i also feel a great technique they used in this advert was by getting real German Football players to star in the advert because it then makes it more renown and popular and reaches out to a much larger audience.

Overall I think the dramatic advert is much more effective for these reasons, one final reason is that the music, the filming and the editing are unbelievably well put together and really stand out to me as a whole advert.

Location pictures

This is one of the places we filmed quite a lot of our music video , we thought this was a great place to film due to it being based in a forest and it being light but a good place to film due to the intense atmosphere.
This is fairly close to the other pictures, We thought this was an excellent place to film because it is a narrow straight path which we thought
could be very useful for a chase scene.

This was a great place to film due to the amount of open area that can be scene, I also feel it is good because there is is many shots, techniques and angles that can be created with this large amount of space.
Although this space wasn't used in our music video, we tried some shots here but realised they didn't work. I feel the shots didn't work because we wanted to make the music video gritty and this location didn't fit into our narrative.
Again, this shot at this location was tried but we felt as a group/team it didn't work and didn't make it into our music video. We felt t didn't work due to it not fitting into the narrative that we wanted to use.

the Warriors- Controversial film

The Warriors (1979) was such a controversial film for its time due to the senseless violence that was included, gangs and people fighting each other for no reason but for there gang, When the film was in the cinemas, it was pulled out due t violence, fighting and even murder was being conducted outside the cinemas due to rival gangs in America and specifically New York going to see the movie, after weeks of violence, they cut the film from the cinema for a while, a Quote from a website listing 100 top controversial movies. http://www.filmsite.org/controversialfilms12.html

"Due to these reports of criminal violence in a few locations, the film was temporarily pulled out of circulation in over half a dozen theaters by its nervous Paramount Studios despite being a box office success. One theater in Washington hired full time security until the end of the film's run. Paramount also attempted to modify the film's advertising campaign by pulling its print and TV advertising, but then was compelled to remove the film from release entirely. The film later gained a cult following when the cable TV and the VCR revolution occurred, and through midnight showings."

You can clearly see why it was pulled from showings in the cinemas, due to the violence that was being held, because of the advertising of the film.

Opinion:

I feel that Paramount did the right thing by pulling it out and then putting it on Video and DVD  because now it has got a cult following all around the world, also i feel the film helped gangs get involved in the film, by giving parts for the Extras to real gang members in New York, i feel this helped control violence y giving gangs something to do, also questioning the gangs about there lives was a huge part of getting knowledge for this movie.

I feel racism isn't a factor in this film, after watching it multiple times, there seems to be no racist language or terms used to offend any race.

The film was that big in itself that President Ronald Reagan enjoyed the film so much that he screened it at an army base for the soldiers.

i feel that this film would never be lost, due to the topics that are raised in this film such as violence and objectifying women, also its a massive cult film which means that its always going to be in the spotlight forever and is never going to grow old.
