the Warriors- Controversial film

The Warriors (1979) was such a controversial film for its time due to the senseless violence that was included, gangs and people fighting each other for no reason but for there gang, When the film was in the cinemas, it was pulled out due t violence, fighting and even murder was being conducted outside the cinemas due to rival gangs in America and specifically New York going to see the movie, after weeks of violence, they cut the film from the cinema for a while, a Quote from a website listing 100 top controversial movies. http://www.filmsite.org/controversialfilms12.html

"Due to these reports of criminal violence in a few locations, the film was temporarily pulled out of circulation in over half a dozen theaters by its nervous Paramount Studios despite being a box office success. One theater in Washington hired full time security until the end of the film's run. Paramount also attempted to modify the film's advertising campaign by pulling its print and TV advertising, but then was compelled to remove the film from release entirely. The film later gained a cult following when the cable TV and the VCR revolution occurred, and through midnight showings."

You can clearly see why it was pulled from showings in the cinemas, due to the violence that was being held, because of the advertising of the film.

Opinion:

I feel that Paramount did the right thing by pulling it out and then putting it on Video and DVD  because now it has got a cult following all around the world, also i feel the film helped gangs get involved in the film, by giving parts for the Extras to real gang members in New York, i feel this helped control violence y giving gangs something to do, also questioning the gangs about there lives was a huge part of getting knowledge for this movie.

I feel racism isn't a factor in this film, after watching it multiple times, there seems to be no racist language or terms used to offend any race.

The film was that big in itself that President Ronald Reagan enjoyed the film so much that he screened it at an army base for the soldiers.

i feel that this film would never be lost, due to the topics that are raised in this film such as violence and objectifying women, also its a massive cult film which means that its always going to be in the spotlight forever and is never going to grow old.
